Safety Coordinator / Safety Leader

Location: Henry, IL (On-Site)
Employment Type: Contract / Project-Based (Construction & Mechanical Scope)


Position Overview

The Safety Coordinator serves as the on-site safety authority supporting industrial construction, mechanical, and operational activities at the Vestolit manufacturing facility in Henry, Illinois. This role requires a strong field presence, hands-on safety leadership, and direct oversight of contractors to ensure full compliance with Orbia safety standards, site procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

This is a boots-on-the-ground role, focused on daily field engagement, permit control, hazard identification, and incident prevention throughout all phases of the project.


Key Responsibilities

Field Safety Oversight & Compliance

  • Maintain daily on-site safety presence supporting construction, mechanical, and maintenance activities

  • Enforce Orbia Life-Saving Rules, site safety procedures, OSHA regulations, and project-specific requirements

  • Identify and immediately correct unsafe conditions or behaviors, including stop-work authority when required

Permit-to-Work (PTW) Management

  • Support the issuing, validation, and closure of permits including:

    • Hot work

    • Confined space entry

    • Line breaking

    • Electrical isolation / LOTO

  • Verify risk assessments, controls, and mitigation measures are in place prior to work execution

Incident Prevention & Investigation

  • Proactively identify hazards and near-miss conditions

  • Report and document incidents, near misses, unsafe acts, and unsafe conditions

  • Support or lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action tracking

Contractor Safety Coordination

  • Monitor and enforce contractor compliance with Orbia safety standards

  • Review and validate Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), toolbox talks, and daily safety plans

  • Coordinate safety expectations across multiple trades and subcontractors

Emergency Preparedness

  • Ensure emergency response plans are communicated and understood by site personnel

  • Verify availability and readiness of emergency equipment

  • Support drills and emergency response readiness as required

Daily Reporting & Communication

  • Prepare and submit daily safety reports including observations, KPIs, corrective actions, and metrics

  • Communicate safety issues, trends, and risks to the Project Manager and site leadership

Audits, Walkdowns & Inspections

  • Conduct routine safety audits, housekeeping inspections, and field walkdowns

  • Participate in joint safety walks with cross-functional teams

  • Track findings through closure

Training & Competency Verification

  • Verify all personnel have required safety training, site orientation, and certifications

  • Validate specialized qualifications (rigging, scaffolding, crane operations, etc.)

PSSR & Commissioning Support

  • Provide safety input during Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR)

  • Verify safety readiness prior to equipment energization or startup

Documentation & Records Management

  • Maintain accurate records for inspections, permits, training, incidents, and safety meetings

  • Ensure documentation meets Orbia compliance and audit standards


Required Qualifications

  • 5–8+ years of safety experience in industrial construction, manufacturing, or heavy industrial environments

  • Strong field-based safety leadership experience

  • Working knowledge of:

    • Permit-to-Work systems

    • LOTO / electrical isolation

    • Confined space and hot work programs

  • Proven experience supporting contractors and multi-trade environments

  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and safety documentation

  • Strong judgment, communication, and escalation skills


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in chemical manufacturing, polymer, or heavy industrial facilities

  • Commissioning or PSSR experience

  • OSHA 30 (or higher), CHST, CSP, or equivalent certifications

  • HAZWOPER, Confined Space, LOTO certifications


Work Environment

  • Industrial manufacturing site

  • Contractor-heavy, active construction and mechanical work

  • Full-time on-site presence required
