Structural Welder D1.1- Traveling

Job Description

About the Role

JGM is looking for an experienced Traveling Structural Welder to join our field erection crews on active job sites across the country. This is hands-on structural steel work — welding beams, columns, connections, and other structural members to AWS D1.1 code, on a 100%-traveling schedule that puts you on a different site as projects require. You'll work alongside ironworkers, fitters, and the field superintendent to keep the erection sequence moving, producing welds that pass inspection the first time.

What You'll Do

•        Perform structural steel welding on beams, columns, connections, and other members in accordance with AWS D1.1 and project specifications.

•        Weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions as the job requires, using FCAW, SMAW, GMAW, and/or SAW processes.

•        Read and interpret shop drawings, erection drawings, and weld symbols to determine joint type, size, and location before starting work.

•        Set up and tend welding equipment, including selecting correct wire/electrode, gas, amperage, and travel speed for the joint and position.

•        Fit and tack members to specification prior to final welding, coordinating with ironworkers and riggers during erection.

•        Perform self-inspection of completed welds — visual inspection for undercut, porosity, spatter, and profile — before turning work over to QC.

•        Correct or repair welds identified as non-conforming by the CWI or QC inspector, and re-test as required.

•        Maintain and pass welder performance qualification (WPQ) testing for the applicable processes and positions.

•        Follow all site-specific safety plans, fall protection requirements, and hot work/fire prevention procedures.

•        Keep welding equipment, leads, and PPE in safe working order; report equipment issues promptly.

•        Travel continuously between active job sites nationwide as project schedules require, often on short notice and for extended durations.

What You Bring

•        Minimum of 3 years of hands-on structural steel welding experience in construction or erection settings.

•        Current, passable welder qualification to AWS D1.1 in the processes and positions required for structural steel erection (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead as applicable).

•        Solid working knowledge of AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code and common structural connection types.

•        Comfortable reading structural drawings, weld symbols, and connection details without close supervision.

•        Experience with FCAW, SMAW, GMAW, and/or SAW welding processes as used in structural steel fabrication and erection.

•        Willing and able to pass a weld test upon hire and periodically thereafter to maintain qualification.

•        Comfortable working at heights and in an active steel erection environment alongside cranes, riggers, and ironworkers.

•        Willing and able to travel 100% of the time, including extended overnight and multi-week assignments away from home, with a valid driver's license.

•        Able to pass a background check and drug screen; JGM is a drug-free workplace.

•        Self-motivated, safety-focused, and dependable — able to produce quality welds with minimal direct supervision.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

•        Regularly works in both outdoor and climate-controlled indoor environments — active construction/erection sites and structural steel decking outdoors, plus indoor, climate-controlled work areas — at a different site or region as assignments rotate.

•        Ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and work at heights while following all fall-protection and site safety requirements.

•        Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., including welding equipment and leads, and remain on your feet for extended periods, including 10–12 hour shifts.

•        Required to wear all applicable PPE (welding hood, flame-resistant clothing, safety-toed footwear, gloves, hearing protection, hard hat, high-visibility vest, etc.).

•        Regular exposure to welding fumes, smoke, heat, and noise typical of an active structural steel erection site.

•        Good vision (corrected or uncorrected) sufficient to judge weld quality, fit-up, and joint alignment.
