SHEET METAL MECHANIC

Job Description

Tradesmen International is immediately hiring experienced Sheet Metal Mechanics for a project in Newport News, VA. Qualified candidates will have a minimum of three years of experience as a first-class Sheet Metal Worker, preferably with shipbuilding or marine industry experience.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with sheet metal fabrication and installation, including foundations, ventilation systems, bulkheads, shipboard furniture, and related fabrication shop work.

Responsibilities

  • Install and fabricate sheet metal components in accordance with drawings, blueprints, and project specifications.
  • Install foundations, ventilation systems, bulkheads, and shipboard furniture.
  • Read and interpret complex ventilation assembly drawings, blueprints, and sketches.
  • Interpret weld symbols, material specifications, datum points, and reference lines.
  • Measure and interpret fractional and decimal dimensions using a ruler and other measuring tools.
  • Lay out piece parts for fabrication and assembly.
  • Assemble fabricated components according to specifications and quality standards.
  • Operate hand tools and sheet metal shop equipment safely and effectively.
  • Maintain a safe and productive work environment while following applicable OSHA requirements.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a first-class Sheet Metal Worker.
  • Experience with shipbuilding or marine construction is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand complex ventilation assembly drawings, blueprints, and sketches.
  • Ability to interpret weld symbols, material types, datum points, and reference lines.
  • Proficiency reading fractional and decimal measurements.
  • Ability to lay out, fabricate, and assemble sheet metal components.
  • Experience working in a physically demanding environment.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations applicable to the shipbuilding industry.
  • Experience using small hand tools, including:
    • Electric drills
    • Grinders
    • Rivet guns
  • Experience operating shop equipment, including:
    • Drill presses
    • Press brakes
    • Shears
    • Other sheet metal fabrication equipment

Additional Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Must successfully pass a hair follicle drug test.
  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position in a shipbuilding environment.
