Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking experienced First Class Shipfitters with a minimum of four (4) years of commercial and/or naval shipbuilding experience. Qualified candidates must have extensive experience with structural fabrication, assembly, welding, burning, shipboard construction, and working from complex drawings and work packages.

 

Required Shipfitter Skills & Experience

Candidates must be proficient in the following:

  • Multi-pass tack welding.
  • Burning with oxygen/propane cutting torches.
  • Heating with oxygen/propane heating torches.
  • Reading and interpreting complex structural assembly drawings, blueprints, and sketches, including:
    • Weld symbols
    • Material types
    • Datum lines
    • Reference lines
  • Reading and comprehending fractional dimensions using a ruler.
  • Laying out piece parts for fabrication and assembly.
  • Assembling structural piece parts according to specifications and quality requirements.
  • Working in physically demanding environments such as shipbuilding or heavy steel fabrication.
  • Understanding and following OSHA regulations applicable to the shipbuilding industry.
  • Operating vibratory tools, including grinders and needle guns.
  • Performing Air Carbon Arc Gouging.
  • Using work packages and drawings to plan and execute work.
  • Using molded lines and ship reference lines to execute required work.
  • Erecting, setting, and making up complex-shaped shell plates.
  • Erecting, setting, and making up decks, bulkheads, trunks, and related structural components.
  • Installing and replacing hull inserts and penetrations.
  • Installing miscellaneous and complex foundations.

 

Mandatory Tack Welding Qualification

All Shipfitters must successfully pass the required Multi-Pass Tack Welder Qualification

The qualification will require:

  • SMAW (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) process
  • MIL-10718-M (A-5A) filler metal of MIL-E-22200/1
  • Vertical Up (3F) position
  • Overhead (4F) position

 

Additional Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • Must successfully pass a hair follicle drug test.
  • Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position in a shipbuilding environment.

 

 

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is an experienced First Class Shipfitter who can independently read drawings and work packages, lay out and assemble complex structural components, perform tack welding and burning operations, and safely execute shipbuilding work to required quality standards.
