Job Description
Position Summary
We are seeking experienced First Class Outside Machinists with commercial or naval shipbuilding experience to support major ship construction, overhaul, repair, and installation projects.
Qualified candidates should have extensive experience installing, aligning, testing, repairing, and maintaining marine propulsion machinery, auxiliary systems, valves, pumps, turbines, generators, compressors, and other shipboard equipment.
Required Experience & Skills
Candidates should have a strong working knowledge of shipbuilding terminology, machinery installation, precision measurement, system testing, and mechanical alignment. Experience with the following is highly desirable:
- Main engine and propulsion plant machinery installation
- Shafting, bearings, liners, and optical alignment
- Liner installation, sizing, soft foot, lapping, and blue checking
- Valve installation, overhaul, packing, and repair, including steam and WOG valves
- Pump installation, alignment, overhaul, and operation
- Centrifugal pumps and ALRE pump/motor installation and alignment
- Steam turbines, generators, diesel equipment, and boiler systems
- Condensers and heat exchangers
- AC and refrigeration systems
- Low- and high-pressure air compressors
- Hydraulic components and systems
- Ballast tanks and sea valves
- Distilling plant testing
- Hydrostatic testing and system testing
- Lube oil flushing and system cleanliness
- Main engine testing and boiler operations
- Boiler tube replacement
- Anchor windlass, winches, cranes, and elevators
- Aircraft elevators, weapons elevators, and deck/hangar doors
- Arresting gear and other specialized shipboard equipment
- Mast and antenna installation
- Hull inserts and fastener installation
- Flange makeup
- Drilling and tapping
- Boring bar operation
- Lathe operation
- Portable milling and drilling equipment
- Precision instruments, including rulers, micrometers, and other measuring tools
- Reading and interpreting complex drawings, blueprints, diagrams, and sketches
- Understanding of basic ship systems and shipboard nomenclature
- Watertight compartment and system grooming requirements
Qualifications
- Minimum 4 years of commercial or naval experience as a First Class Machinist
- Demonstrated shipbuilding or ship repair experience
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to read and understand complex technical drawings and blueprints
- Experience with precision measuring and alignment equipment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a skilled trade team
- Strong commitment to safety, quality, and workmanship
- Ability to complete required shipyard/DOD safety training and medical clearances
Additional Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check.
- Must successfully pass a hair follicle drug test.
- Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the position in a shipbuilding environment.
