We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Fitter to fabricate heavy structural steel members based on detailed shop drawings. This role involves fitting girders, beams, columns, base plates, stiffeners, and complex bolted and welded connections in a fabrication shop environment. Candidates must be able to accurately interpret structural steel drawings and work to tight tolerances in coordination with welders and QA/QC teams.
Drawing Interpretation & Layout
Read and interpret structural steel shop drawings, including:
• Girder beam layouts
• Column elevations and base plate details
• Section cuts and connection details
• Bills of Material (BOM)
Perform accurate layout for:
• Hole patterns
• Plate locations
• Bolt spacing
• Stiffeners, gusset plates, and shear tabs
Fitting & Fabrication
Fit and tack weld:
• Structural beams and girders
• Columns with base plates and anchor bolt templates
• Moment and shear connections
• Bracing and gusset assemblies
• Ensure proper alignment, squareness, and fit-up prior to final welding
• Prepare assemblies for shop welding and/or field bolting
Bolting & Connections
Install and verify:
• High-strength bolt patterns
• Clip angles, shear tabs, and splice plates
• Understand shop-weld vs field-bolt requirements
Quality & Tolerances
• Work to tight dimensional tolerances per drawings and specs
• Verify fit-up meets structural and erection requirements
• Coordinate with welders and inspectors for final approval
• 3–5+ years experience as a structural steel fitter
• Proven experience with:
• Heavy girders and beams
• Structural columns and base plates
• Complex multi-plate connections
Ability to read:
• Structural shop drawings
• Weld symbols and bolt callouts
• Section and detail views
Proficient with layout tools:
• Tape, square, levels, plumb bobs
• Burning tables, mag drills, hand tools
Strong understanding of:
• Structural steel tolerances
• Fabrication sequencing
• Fit-up for weld shrinkage and erection
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in AISC-certified fabrication shops
Familiarity with:
• High-strength bolting procedures
• Structural welding coordination
• Crane and rigging experience (preferred)
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 (preferred)
